Last Survivor Rule
Twelve diaries, one throne—survive or the world ends with you.
The Last Survivor Rule is the foundational mechanic that drives the entire Survival Game in Future Diary. When Deus Ex Machina, the god who governs the world, grows too weak to continue his role, he initiates a contest among twelve chosen individuals. Each is granted a Future Diary—a device that reveals a fragment of their personal future—and is set against the others in a lethal competition. The rule is brutally simple: the final holder standing inherits the throne of godhood over the world.

Lore & Background
The Last Survivor Rule exists because a god, no matter how powerful, is not immortal in the way the story's cosmology demands. Deus Ex Machina's weakening is not a metaphor; it is a structural failure that, if unaddressed, will unravel the world he sustains. The Survival Game is his solution: a trial by attrition that forces one of his creations to prove they are worthy of the mantle. The rule is absolute and non-negotiable. There is no jury, no appeal, no tiebreaker. Only the binary of life and death among the twelve determines the outcome.
Did You Know?
- The Last Survivor Rule is not unique to one world in the series' cosmology; the framework of a god selecting holders and pitting them against each other is a recurring structural motif across the broader narrative.
- The diaries each show a different type of future (schedules, conversations, weather, deaths, etc.), meaning no single holder has a complete picture of the game board—information asymmetry is baked into the rule itself.
