Weather Diary
When the sky becomes a weapon, the storm never misses.
The Weather Diary (天気日記) is the 5th of the twelve Future Diaries in the survival game orchestrated by Deus Ex Machina. It grants its holder a continuously updated, highly accurate forecast of atmospheric conditions—temperature, precipitation, wind speed and direction, cloud cover, and pressure—over a defined geographic area and time window. In a game where every participant is trying to outmaneuver the others, a diary that lets you see the sky's intentions before they manifest is a quiet but devastating tactical edge.
Held by Taro Yashiro, the Weather Diary turns meteorology into a weapon. Rather than predicting a person's actions directly, it gives the holder the power to predict the environment in which those actions will unfold, allowing them to stage ambushes in sudden downpours, force opponents into open ground during heat waves, or simply wait for the storm to do their killing for them.

Lore & Background
In the world of Future Diary, the diaries are not merely tools; they are extensions of the holder's will, each one reflecting a particular facet of reality that the user has chosen to master. The Weather Diary embodies the principle that the environment is the great equalizer—no matter how clever a participant's plan, a sudden thunderstorm or a wall of fog can unravel it in seconds. Taro Yashiro, a pragmatic and methodical man, chose this diary because it required no direct confrontation with another human. He could let the atmosphere do the work.
The diary's information is presented as a dense, layered forecast: layered isobars, precipitation probability percentages, wind vectors, and temperature gradients, all updating in real time as the game's timeline shifts. Because the Future Diary Game exists in a closed, accelerated loop, the weather patterns are not random; they are deterministic within the game's physics, and the diary reads them with near-perfect fidelity. This means a holder can, in principle, predict a hurricane's path to the hour, or the exact minute a flash flood will crest a street.
The philosophical weight of the diary is that it predicts nature, not people. It cannot tell the holder where an opponent will be, what they will say, or whether they will flee. It tells them what the rain will do. The holder must still read the human element themselves, which is where most Weather Diary strategies ultimately hinge on the user's own judgment and spatial awareness as much as on the diary's data.
Reader's Guide
PREDICTION SCOPE AND FORMAT The Weather Diary displays a continuous, geographically bounded forecast for the holder's chosen area. Information is rendered as a multi-layered meteorological readout: surface temperature, dew point, precipitation type and probability (expressed as percentages), wind speed and direction in vector form, atmospheric pressure trends, cloud-cover density, and visibility. The forecast window extends forward in time in granular increments—minutes to hours—allowing the holder to see not just current conditions but the evolution of a weather system. The data updates in real time as the game's timeline progresses.
EXPLOITATION The holder uses the forecast to engineer environmental kills: positioning an opponent where a flash flood will crest, luring them into open ground during a heat spike that will cause disorientation, or timing an ambush for the moment a thunderstorm cuts power and visibility. Because the diary predicts the setting rather than the actor, the holder pairs it with their own observational skills to close the gap. Taro Yashiro, in particular, favors patience—waiting for the atmosphere to create the opening rather than forcing one.
HARD LIMITATIONS AND BLIND SPOTS The diary cannot predict human decisions, other diaries' interventions, or any non-meteorological event. It has no awareness of indoor conditions, underground spaces, or shielded environments. Its geographic range is finite; beyond the forecast boundary, the data degrades. It also cannot predict caused weather—artificial flooding, chemical dispersal, or any other participant-manipulated environmental change. The holder must still solve the problem of where the opponent will be independently.
DECISIVE MOMENT The Weather Diary's most critical use came when Taro leveraged a rapidly forming storm cell to cut off an opponent's escape route along a coastal road, the sudden squall turning the narrow path into an impassable wall of water. The diary's minute-by-minute pressure drop gave him the exact window to stage the blockade. However, the diary's inability to predict the opponent's reaction to the weather—specifically, their decision to abandon the route and go around—meant the trap only partially succeeded, and Taro was forced into a direct confrontation he had hoped to avoid.
Did You Know?
- The Weather Diary is unique among the twelve diaries in that it predicts a natural system rather than a human action or object, making it the only diary whose data is entirely independent of the holder's own behavior.
- The Weather Diary's holder, Taro Yashiro, is notable for his patient, non-confrontational playstyle, often preferring to let atmospheric events eliminate threats rather than engaging in direct combat.
