Biology and range
Kuiterichthys anglerfishes have the second and third dorsal spines free of the skin.[3] Their rough skin is densely covered in denticles.[3] They possess a caudal peduncle, and the rear margins of the dorsal and anal fins attach to it before the caudal fin base.[3] Their distribution ranges from off Yamba, New South Wales, south and west to off Esperance, Western Australia, including around Tasmania.[4][5]
Kuiterichthys pietschi was described from off northern New South Wales.[5] The genus is classified within the order Lophiiformes and family Antennariidae by some sources, while WoRMS places it in family Histiophrynidae.[1][6][7]
What the specialist sources record
The Fishes of Australia account notes that Kuiterichthys furcipilis is known as the Rough Anglerfish.[5] The ETYFish Project states that Kuiterichthys furcipilis was named for its forked, hair-like dermal spinules.[8] The same source indicates Kuiterichthys pietschi was named in honor of Theodore W. Pietsch.[8] GBIF reports 180 occurrence records for the genus as of October 2026.[7]
The 5th edition of Fishes of the World does not recognize subfamilies within Antennariidae.[1][9]
