The Frisii, a Germanic tribe, settled along the North Sea after the breakup of Celtic Europe in the 4th century BC, controlling an area from roughly present-day Bremen to Bruges. Roman accounts, notably by Pliny the Elder and Tacitus, describe their forested lands, agricultural lifestyle, and elected kings with limited powers. The Frisii halted a Roman advance in the 1st century BC and maintained independence until at least 296, when some were forcibly resettled as laeti. Archaeological evidence of terp Tritzum pottery suggests resettlement in Flanders and Kent. The region was largely abandoned during the Migration Period due to conflict, climate change, and sea-level rise.

After one or two centuries, new Frisians—likely descended from Frisii, Angles, Saxons, and Jutes—repopulated the coast. Early medieval Frisian society had four social classes: nobiles, vrijen, laten, and slaves. Under King Aldgisl, the Frisians resisted the Frankish mayor Ebroin, but under King Redbad, the Franks gained the upper hand, culminating in the Battle of the Boarn in 734, where Charles Martel defeated the Frisians and killed their last king, Poppo. The Carolingians then ruled Frisia through grewan. Around 800, Vikings attacked, and the Frisians were released from foreign military service to defend themselves, successfully driving the Vikings out after the Battle of Norditi in 884.

Frisia developed a unique 'Frisian freedom' without aristocratic structures, governed by elected redjeven. After territorial losses to Holland in the Friso-Hollandic Wars and economic decline in the mid-14th century, wealthy haadlingen emerged as local leaders. Internal conflicts between the Fetkeapers and Skieringers led to the intervention of Albert III, Duke of Saxony, who conquered Friesland in 1498 and was appointed hereditary potestate. In 1515, Pier Gerlofs Donia led a rebellion of haadlingen and peasants, forming the Arumer Zwarte Hoop with support from Charles II, Duke of Guelders, against Habsburg authorities.
