French folk-pop duo known for "Prayer in C".

Last updated

Lilly Wood and the Prick, also known simply as Lilly Wood and Lillywood, is a French folk-pop duo. The group consists of Nili Hadida and Benjamin Cotto. They are best known for their single "Prayer in C", which gained popularity after being remixed by German DJ Robin Schulz.

History

Lilly Wood and the Prick came together in 2006 after a chance meeting at a Parisian café led to a songwriting partnership. Two years later, they recorded a cover of Santigold's "L.E.S. Artistes." Around the same time, guitarist Pierre Guimard discovered their songs on Myspace and offered to collaborate, opening his studio for their production work.

In 2008, one of their tracks appeared on the compilation Folk & Proud. The following year, they released an EP titled Lilly Who and the What?, a playful nod to their stage name, through the independent label Choke Industry, which Guimard had founded alongside their manager, Matthieu Tessier. After 2009, the duo signed with another indie label, Cinq7.

2010–2013: Invincible Friends and The Fight

Their debut full-length album, Invincible Friends, arrived on 31 May 2010. On 9 February 2011, they received a nomination for the "revelation of the public" award at the Victoires de la Musique. At the official ceremony on 1 March, broadcast on France 2, TV5 Monde, and France Inter, they won the category, beating out Ben l'Oncle Soul, Camélia Jordana, Zaz, Féfé, Guillaume Grand, Florent Marchet, and Okou.

They then embarked on a tour that included a show at the Olympia in Paris on 1 June 2011. Their second album, The Fight, came out on 5 November 2012. In 2013, they appeared in a film titled Lilly Wood and The Prick au Trianon, directed by Benjamin Lemaire.

2014–2016: "Prayer in C" and Shadows

In June 2014, they released "Prayer in C" as a single, a track that originally appeared on Invincible Friends. German DJ and producer Robin Schulz remixed the song, which became a hit across Europe. That success helped their next solo single, "I Love You," become their highest-charting song in France in 2015, peaking at number 65. They released the album Shadows in 2016, along with two additional singles: "Box of Noise" and a studio session version of "Kokomo."

2020–present: Most Anything

The duo returned in 2020 with the ballad "Lonely Life," released during the COVID-19 pandemic. They later announced a new album titled Most Anything, from which they released the singles "You Want My Money," "A Song," and "In Love for the Last Time." This album was noted for its experimental sound and new rhythms, a departure from their earlier work. Following that, they put out a Spanish-language version of "You Want My Money," stylized as "Quieres mi plata."
