Olive, the Other Reindeer

A dog named Olive sets out to save Christmas.

Last updated

Olive, the Other Reindeer is a 1999 animated Christmas special based on a 1997 book by Vivian Walsh and J. Otto Seibold. Directed by Oscar-nominated animator Steve Moore and produced by Matt Groening's company, it aired on Fox on December 17, 1999, a decade after The Simpsons debuted. Drew Barrymore voiced the lead character and was an executive producer.

Plot

Olive is a Jack Russell Terrier who acts like a person. On Christmas Eve, she buys a fake Rolex from Martini, a penguin con artist who just lost his job at the zoo. Back home, Olive finds her owner Tim upset because there will be no Christmas, and he is disappointed that Olive is not a normal dog.

While listening to the radio for comfort, Olive hears a news report that Blitzen, one of Santa's reindeer, cannot fly this year, so all the other reindeer will have to work harder. Olive's pet flea convinces her the report actually said "Olive, the other reindeer." When Tim tries to apologize, the flea twists his words so Olive believes Tim hates her. Heartbroken, she runs away to save Christmas and win back Tim's love.

On her way to the bus station, a bitter Postman learns of Olive's plan and decides to stop her. He wants Christmas ruined because the holiday season puts too much strain on the postal system.

It later comes out that his first time on the naughty list started a downward spiral, making him more vengeful and naughtier. Martini helps Olive escape when the Postman tries to frame her for mail fraud and capture her. Olive and Martini then catch a bus to the North Pole, with the Postman chasing them.

During a layover in Arctic Junction, they stop at a restaurant where the Postman, disguised as a waitress, kidnaps Olive. She escapes using a metal file from a package addressed to her by "Deus Ex Machina," but misses her connecting bus. At a nearby bar, the patrons are hostile at first, but Olive persuades them to be humble and rediscover their Christmas spirit. The bar owner, Round John Virgin, drives Olive and Martini to the North Pole complex.

The security guard refuses to let them in, so Martini comes up with a complicated plan to trick the guard into disabling the security system, allowing Olive inside. The Postman follows and delivers a parcel of fake letters full of insults to Santa. The letters almost convince Santa to cancel Christmas, but Olive notices they have no postmarks and are therefore forgeries. Olive takes Blitzen's place in the sleigh, but she has trouble keeping up with the flight.
