Founder of the Arsacid dynasty of Parthia, who conquered Parthia from the Seleucids and laid the foundations of a future empire.

Last updated

Arsaces I was the first king of Parthia and founder of the Arsacid dynasty, ruling from 247 BC to 217 BC.[1] He was a leader of the Parni tribe, part of the Dahae confederacy, and conquered the satrapy of Parthia from Andragoras.[1] His name Arsacēs derives from the Parthian Aršak, a diminutive of the Old Iranian word for "hero".[2]

What the cited sources add

Strabo also reports that some say Arsaces was a Bactrian who fled from Diodotus and caused Parthia to revolt.[7] According to Strabo, Arsaces was initially weak but grew strong by taking neighboring territory until he ruled the whole country inside the Euphrates.[7]
