Reception
In Japan, Final Lap 2 was the top-earning upright and cockpit arcade game of September 1990, according to Game Machine. It became the country’s highest-grossing dedicated cabinet of 1991 and the third highest-grossing overall arcade game that year, trailing Street Fighter II and Final Fight. The following year, it ranked second in Japan, again behind Street Fighter II. In North America, it led the RePlay upright charts from June to July 1991 and topped the deluxe cabinet chart in March 1992. It earned a Silver Award at the 1992 AAMA tradeshow for 1991 sales. Crash magazine’s Mark Caswell praised it as a good racing game. Famitsu’s four reviewers found it less appealing than similar titles, noting poor graphics and difficulty reading the speedometer and shifting gears.
