Alpine A525

Alpine's final Renault-powered car, finishing last in 2025.

Last updated

The Alpine A525 is the fifth Formula One car produced by Alpine since the team rebranded from Renault, competing in the 2025 Formula One World Championship. Pierre Gasly drove the car for his third season with the team, while the second seat rotated: rookie Jack Doohan raced from Australia through the Miami Grand Prix, after which Franco Colapinto took over from the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix for the rest of the season. Reserve drivers included Paul Aron, Ryō Hirakawa, and Kush Maini; Colapinto had previously held a reserve role before swapping with Doohan. The car was unveiled at a dedicated event on 18 February 2025 and made its race debut at the 2025 Australian Grand Prix.

The A525 is the first Alpine Formula One car to use Eni fuels and lubricants, as previous suppliers BP and Castrol moved to supply the Audi Formula One team from 2025 onward. It is also the last Alpine car—and the last Formula One car for the foreseeable future—to use Renault engines, as Renault ends its engine development and supply program after 2025, with Alpine switching to Mercedes engines in 2026. The car’s poor performance resulted in Alpine finishing last in the Constructors’ Championship, the worst result ever achieved by Team Enstone.

Livery

Livery Alpine presented the car at the F1 75 Live event on 18 February 2025. The livery closely resembled that of the Alpine A521, bringing back the French national racing color Bleu de France, with pink accents on the BWT text on the sidepods and the front of the car. Mercado Libre colors were added for the Americas triple-header (United States, Mexico City, São Paulo), and the logo of Xbox Game Studios’ The Outer Worlds 2 appeared at the Mexico City Grand Prix.

Opening rounds

Competition and development history Opening rounds The A525 debuted in Australia, where Gasly qualified ninth and Doohan fourteenth. Doohan crashed early in the race, while Gasly finished eleventh, scoring no points.

At the Chinese sprint event, both Alpines qualified sixteenth and seventeenth; Gasly recovered to twelfth, and Doohan finished last after a penalty for hitting Gabriel Bortoleto. Both drivers exited in Q1 for the Chinese Grand Prix, with Gasly qualifying sixteenth and Doohan eighteenth. Gasly finished eleventh but was disqualified for an underweight chassis; Doohan finished thirteenth.

Lore & Background

The A525 was unveiled at a bespoke event on 18 February 2025, with a livery largely similar to the Alpine A521, featuring the return of Bleu de France and pink accents for BWT. Mercado Libre colours were added for the Americas triple-header, and the Xbox Game Studios logo for The Outer Worlds 2 appeared at the Mexico City Grand Prix. The car was the first Alpine to use Eni fuels and lubricants, replacing BP and Castrol.

Competitively, the A525 struggled from the outset. Pierre Gasly scored the team's first points with a seventh-place finish in Bahrain, while the rotating second seat saw Jack Doohan replaced by Franco Colapinto ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Colapinto crashed during qualifying on his debut and finished sixteenth. The car's highest finish came at the British Grand Prix, where Gasly placed sixth.

Alpine finished last in the Constructors' Championship, the worst result for Team Enstone. The A525 is the last Alpine car and the last Formula One car for the foreseeable future to use Renault engines, as Renault ceased its engine development and supply programme at the end of 2025. Alpine will switch to Mercedes engines in 2026.

Reader's Guide

The Alpine A525 marks the end of an era for both Alpine and Renault in Formula One. As the final car to use a Renault power unit before the team transitions to Mercedes engines in 2026, the A525 represents the conclusion of a long-standing engine supply relationship. Its underperformance, resulting in last place in the Constructors' Championship, was the worst finish Team Enstone had ever achieved. The car also introduced a rotating driver seat arrangement, with Jack Doohan starting the season before being replaced by Franco Colapinto, who had previously served as a reserve driver.

Reserve drivers Paul Aron, Ryō Hirakawa, and Kush Maini also contributed during the season. The A525's livery carried forward Alpine's French racing heritage while incorporating sponsor-specific changes for certain races. Despite its lack of competitive success, the car's place in history is secured as the last Renault-powered Formula One car and the final Alpine entry before a major technical shift.
