Salah's playing career was entirely with Zamalek, where he won the Egyptian Premier League three times (1977–78, 1983–84, 1987–88) and the Egypt Cup three times (1977, 1979, 1988). At the continental level, he won the African Cup of Champions Clubs twice (1984, 1986) and the Afro-Asian Club Championship in 1987. With Egypt, he played in three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, finishing fourth in 1980 and 1984, and winning the title in 1986. He was named to the Africa Cup of Nations Dream Team in 1980.

Salah began his managerial career with Maaden from 1999 to 2001, followed by Baladyet El Mahalla in 2001–2002 and Goldi in 2002. He coached Ghazl El Mahalla between 2003 and 2004, then briefly led Ittihad El Iskandary in 2004. He managed El Masry from 2005 to 2006, Tanta in 2006–2007, and returned to Ittihad El Iskandary for 2007–2008. In 2008, he had short spells with Baladyet El Mahalla and El Tersana, then managed El Mansoura SC from 2009 to 2010 and El Telefonat in 2010–2011. He moved to Saudi Arabia to lead Al-Shoulla in 2011, winning the Saudi First Division in the 2011–12 season. He then managed Wehda Mecca from 2013 to 2014. Between 2014 and 2016, he held multiple roles at Zamalek including assistant coach, managing director, first-team manager, and caretaker manager. Later, he managed Haras El Hodoud in 2017, served as caretaker at Zamalek again in 2017, and led Nogoom El Mostakbal from 2017 to 2018, winning the Egyptian Second Division in 2017–18. He also managed Pharco in 2018, FC Masr from 2018 to 2019, Suez SC in 2019, Al Tarsana SC from 2019 to 2020, and Nogoom FC and Tanta SC in 2020. On 21 February 2023, he returned to manage Al-Shoulla 11 years after his first stint.
