History
Mohammed bin Badr Al-Sadah, who began his football administration career as a member of the Al Sadd Board of Directors in 1972, founded Al-Shamal in 1980 and served as its first president. With limited resources, the team initially played on dirt pitches and produced sub-par results, prompting a focus on youth development. This approach produced players such as Adnan Abdullah, the first Al-Shamal player to represent the Qatar national team, and Jassim Al Muhaiza, who played for three Qatar national team age categories in a single season. Originally only a football club, Al-Shamal added a handball section in 1982, coached by Ezz El-Din Bin Sultan and Ramadan Madani Abdel-Al. Volleyball followed under Abdel-Azim Bayoumi and Mamdouh Ali, then table tennis overseen by a Chinese coach, basketball under Hassan Youssef and Mohammed Hamed, and athletics first coached by Ahmed Al-Maghrabi then Qadri Bakri. Age categories for the football team were also formed during this period. The youth football team placed third in the General Youth League in 1982–83. In 1983, Abel Verônico became senior coach and led the club to its first championship, the 1985–86 Qatari 2nd Division, earning promotion to the top tier for the 1986–87 Qatar Stars League. The club later won the Arab Peace Championship in 1995 and its most notable triumph, the 1996 Sheikh Jassim Cup.
