History
The club was founded on 9 September 1923 by a group of friends and football fans as Juventus Football Club Arezzo, named in honour of Juventus F.C. In 1930, after merging with several other minor Arezzo teams, it became Unione Sportiva Arezzo and was admitted to the newly created Serie C in 1935. Financial troubles led to relegation from Serie C in 1953, but the team returned five years later. Arezzo began playing at the Stadio Comunale in 1961. The club earned its first promotion to Serie B in 1966, celebrating with a friendly win over Brazilian side Vasco da Gama, but was relegated the following year.
In 1971, striker Francesco Graziani joined the club, becoming a key player and fan favourite. The third promotion to Serie B came in 1982 under coach Antonio Valentin Angelillo, with Tullio Gritti as striker. The previous year, Arezzo had won its only Serie C Cup, defeating Ternana in the final. In 1984 the club narrowly missed promotion to Serie A, finishing five points behind the last promotion place.
Despite a squad built for a Serie A push, Arezzo was relegated to Serie C1 in 1988. Financial troubles caused the club to disband in 1993, seven matchdays before the end of the Serie C1 season. A group of shareholders led by former player Ciccio Graziani then founded Associazione Calcio Arezzo, which was admitted to Serie D. In 1996, Serse Cosmi, a coach with little experience in higher divisions, was appointed manager and immediately won the Serie D title, returning the club to professional football.
In the 1999–2000 season, despite contributions from Fabio Bazzani, the club lost the promotion playoffs. After Cosmi left for Perugia, Antonio Cabrini became coach, and Mario Frick replaced Bazzani as forward. Arezzo returned to Serie B in 2004 under Mario Somma; the following season, with Pasquale Marino replacing Somma, the team barely retained its Serie B place.
