History
TSV Hartberg came into being on 29 April 1946. For many years, the club played in the lower divisions of Styria before moving up to the Styrian Landesliga in 1978, a step made possible by backing from sponsor Sparkasse Hartberg. During the 1980s, the side built a name for itself as a tough cup opponent, regularly knocking off teams from higher divisions. In the 1986–87 Austrian Cup, Hartberg made it to the round of 16, with a standout win over Wiener Sport-Club, a squad that included Hans Krankl, a former European Golden Shoe winner who had starred for Barcelona and the Austrian national team.
The following season, 1987–88, Hartberg claimed its first Landesliga title but missed out on promotion after placing second in the playoffs. The club’s best cup run came in 1988–89, when it reached the Austrian Cup quarter-finals while still a fourth-tier side. Along the way, Hartberg beat top-flight SK Austria Klagenfurt and second-tier SV Spittal/Drau, then fell to SV Austria Salzburg on penalties after a 3–3 draw. In 1989–90, Hartberg won the Landesliga again but once more came up short in the promotion playoffs.
After a few mid-table finishes, the club took the league title for a third time in 1994–95, earning a spot in the Regionalliga Mitte (third tier). That same season, Hartberg advanced to the Austrian Cup semi-finals, defeating three higher-division sides before losing 1–0 to DSV Leoben. In 1995–96, Hartberg won the Regionalliga Mitte and moved up to the Second Division, then called the 2. Division.
The club was relegated in 1997–98 due to a league restructuring, even though it had avoided relegation under the original format. In 1998–99, Hartberg again topped the Regionalliga Mitte but lost a two-legged promotion playoff to WSG Wattens. The 2005–06 season saw Hartberg capture its third Regionalliga Mitte title and return to the Second Division, now known as the Erste Liga. That stay lasted only one season, and the club was back in the Regionalliga Mitte for 2007–08, finishing seventh.
In 2008–09, Hartberg won the Regionalliga Ost on the final day of the season, securing another promotion to the Austrian Second Division, then called the First League. The club finished last in 2010–11 but stayed up by winning the relegation play-off. In 2014–15, after again ending the season in last place, Hartberg was relegated to the third tier.
