American Folkways series

A 28-volume series on American regional folkways.

The American Folkways series is a 28-volume set of books initiated and principally edited by Erskine Caldwell, published by Duell, Sloan and Pearce from 1941 to 1955. Each volume focuses on a different cultural region of the United States, combining documentary essays and folklore. Caldwell conceived the series while in Europe, envisioning regionalists describing the indigenous quality of life. He rejected the term "folklore" in favor of "folkways" to emphasize contemporary social and economic implications.
