Plot
At a band practice, Murray presents Jemaine and Bret with his friendship graph and urges them to move up from "work mates" past "colleagues"—a label he applies to Greg—to reach "friends." He repeatedly mentions his best friend, Jim. After they watch a film, build a fort, and have a sleepover, the duo climbs the graph to the friend level. Murray then arranges a barbecue where Jim, who is very curious, interrogates them. Later, Jim calls to see if they want to hang out, but gets upset when Bret passes along Jemaine's comment that Jim is a "dick." More problems arise, such as converting Murray's desk into a ping-pong table, and Bret and Jemaine slide down the graph to "strangers," a rank lower than where they started. Murray tells them he'll see them at the next band meeting, but they will "not know each other," then introduces himself and leaves with Jim. Meanwhile, Mel approaches Bret and Jemaine to thank Bret for something he did in her dream. Later, she scolds him for something else he did in another dream—the details are unclear, but it shocks and disgusts Jemaine. Mel insists Bret apologize for his dream actions, but the behavior continues. At Murray's martial arts studio, Mel and Jim separately attack Bret and Jemaine, causing minor injuries. Although Jim is Murray's closest friend, he never appears or gets mentioned again for the rest of the series.
