History
The flag was chosen through a contest announced in 1996 by Governor Juan Carlos Romero, which drew more than 4,000 designs. The winning entry was submitted as the work of 7th grade "A" students at Nicolás Avellaneda School, though teacher Nélida Baigorria later admitted she and her brother were the actual designers. Baigorria stated she had not involved the children due to time constraints, and after obtaining permission from vice principal Edith Lemos de Ortíz, she completed the project after work hours. She learned of the competition shortly before its deadline because the governor was in conflict with education staff, and information sent to schools was not distributed. The design was finished on 22 November, the last day of the competition, but another teacher accidentally spilled hot water on it. On 16 February 1997, the victory was announced; vice principal Lemos de Ortíz stated the flag resulted from workshops informing students about Salta's historical roots. The school received 10 computers as a reward. The flag was officially adopted by Law No. 6946 on 14 June 1997.
