Dungeon Master: Theron's Quest
A lighter, modified version of Dungeon Master for the TurboGrafx.
Last updated
Dungeon Master: Theron's Quest is a modified version of the classic dungeon-crawling video game Dungeon Master, developed for the TurboGrafx/PC Engine console. Released in Japan on September 18, 1992, and in North America the following year, it presents a streamlined experience with a new protagonist and a series of smaller dungeons.
Lore & Background
Dungeon Master: Theron's Quest follows the character Theron as he seeks seven pieces of a blue knight's armor: Shield Defiant, Taza Poleyn, Tazahelm, Taza Boots, Taza Armor, Soulcage, and The Retaliator. Each piece is hidden in one of seven mini dungeons, which are partially identical or inspired by the original dungeons from Dungeon Master and Chaos Strikes Back. Unlike the original's single large dungeon, this version offers a segmented structure.
Reader's Guide
The game retains the core mechanics of the original: players lead a party of up to four champions through dungeons, gaining experience and finding items. However, it introduces notable differences. After completing each dungeon, the entire party loses all collected items, and the three champions other than Theron lose their skills and statistics. Saving is only possible between dungeons, a change from the original's mid-level save option.
The absence of mid-dungeon saving is compensated by numerous resurrection 'Altars of VI'. The game also features fewer items, spells, and monsters, making it easier than the original. Upon release, Electronic Gaming Monthly's four reviewers gave it an average score of 6.5 out of 10, with most noting that Dungeon Master had aged but remained a solid RPG, while one reviewer disliked the dungeon crawl genre. The CD-quality soundtrack was praised.
