The Orphanage
Where flames were hidden before they could consume the world.
In the shadowed history of Tokyo, a secluded church-run orphanage served as a shelter for children without families. Though it later became a gathering point for young pyrokinetics under the watchful eye of the Evangelist's organization, it was not originally an official facility of the Evangelist. It is most famously known as the childhood home of Shinra Kusakabe, where his destiny was shaped before he was taken by the Fire Force.

Lore & Background
For Shinra Kusakabe, the orphanage represented a lifetime of suppression. He lived among others who understood his cursed ability to ignite without cause, yet he feared the destruction it brought. Sister Sumire was an adult nun who worked there, not a former child resident. The facility was managed by a priest known only as Father or 'the priest'—a normal human, not an Adolla Linker. After his mother's death and the incident with his brother, Shinra was taken by the Fire Force; he did not run away. The orphanage continued to exist after his departure.
Reader's Guide
The Orphanage serves as the emotional origin point for the series' protagonist. While it appears primarily in flashbacks and exposition, its influence permeates the entire narrative arc of Shinra Kusakabe. It highlights the systemic manipulation behind the spontaneous combustion phenomenon, revealing that many 'cursed' children were actually being harvested by a higher power. This setting establishes the deep bond between Shinra and Sister before their ideological split. Understanding this location is vital for fans to grasp why Shinra fights so desperately against the Evangelist's plan. It transforms his battle from a simple duty into a personal crusade to protect others from suffering the same isolation and experimentation he endured.
