In the past, Inter Milan was seen as the club of the Milan bourgeoisie (nicknamed 'braggart'), whereas Milan was supported mainly by the working class (nicknamed 'screwdriver'). Inter fans had the 'luxury' to go to the San Siro stadium by motorcycle, while Milan fans were known as 'tram' supporters. Today, this socioeconomic divide has largely been mitigated. The rivalry has extended to the Coppa Italia, Champions League, and Supercoppa Italiana. Both clubs share the San Siro stadium, with Inter ultras in the Curva Nord and Milan ultras in the Curva Sud.

Inter won their 19th title in 2020–21; Milan tied that in the following season. In January 2023 Inter won the Supercoppa Italiana 3–0 against Milan.
