Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster

High-definition remaster of Final Fantasy X and X-2.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster is a role-playing game compilation from Square Enix, released in 2013. It upgrades the visuals and audio of the original PlayStation 2 titles Final Fantasy X (2001) and Final Fantasy X-2 (2003) to high definition. The collection incorporates content that was previously exclusive to the International versions of both games, plus an original audio drama that takes place one year after X-2. Chinese studio Virtuos handled much of the development, with Square Enix assisting and publishing.

The compilation launched for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in Japan in December 2013, followed by a worldwide release in March 2014. It later arrived on PlayStation 4 in May 2015, Windows in May 2016, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One in April 2019, and Nintendo Switch 2 in July 2026. Critics generally praised the graphical overhaul and the chance to revisit the games on modern hardware, though some noted minor upgrade flaws and uneven quality between the two titles. The added content received mixed reactions. By September 2021, the Final Fantasy X series had sold over 20.8 million units worldwide, surpassing 21.1 million by the end of March 2022.

The first game follows Tidus, a teenager transported to the world of Spira after encountering the creature Sin. He becomes a guardian for summoner Yuna on her pilgrimage to defeat Sin, uncovering connections to both their fathers. Its combat uses a Conditional Turn-Based Battle system allowing mid-battle party swaps, and character progression occurs via the Sphere Grid, where players choose skills or attributes to improve. The sequel, set two years later, casts Yuna as a treasure hunter searching for spheres that might lead to Tidus. It reintroduces the job system through the Garment Grid: dresspheres (costumes) grant different abilities and can be swapped during battle. Minigames like Sphere Break and blitzball (also in X) appear.

Both games retain their core gameplay but receive extensive graphical updates, and much of X’s music was rearranged. All regional versions include International content: X adds an expert Sphere Grid and optional bosses; X-2 includes extra dresspheres, new minigames, and the Creature Creator system, which lets players capture monsters and NPCs to train and fight alongside the party, similar to Pokémon. Captured allies can also battle in a coliseum.

Lore & Background

The HD remaster covers both Final Fantasy X and its sequel X-2. The first game follows teenager Tidus, who is transported to the world of Spira after an encounter with the creature Sin. He becomes a guardian of summoner Yuna, protecting her on a pilgrimage to defeat Sin. Gameplay uses the Conditional Turn-Based Battle system, allowing party member swapping mid-combat, and characters level up via the Sphere Grid. The second game is set two years after X and features Yuna as a treasure hunter searching for spheres that lead her to Tidus. It reintroduces the job system through the Garment Grid, where jobs are acquired as dresspheres that can be changed in battle. X-2 includes minigames such as Sphere Break and blitzball.
