Lore & Background
Final Fantasy Awakening was planned beginning in November 2014 after the online elements of Final Fantasy Agito stalled due to technical difficulties. According to original director Hajime Tabata, Awakening was the true realisation of his earliest plans for Type-0. The game was overseen by staff from Square Enix, while main development was handled by Perfect World, chosen for their track record with online games. It was first announced at the 2015 Tokyo Game Show under the provisional title Final Fantasy Type-0 Online, with its first beta test opening in mainland China in April 2016. The game met with commercial success, achieving two million downloads within its month of Chinese release.
Reader's Guide
Final Fantasy Awakening represents a notable experiment in bringing a console-style Final Fantasy experience to mobile platforms with a multiplayer-only focus. Its development was directly tied to the technical failures of Final Fantasy Agito, and it was seen by director Hajime Tabata as the closest realization of his original vision for Type-0. The game's English release marked the first time Square Enix licensed a Final Fantasy title to another company for publishing. Despite strong popular appeal and positive reviews from game journalists, the English version closed in 2019 due to service changes, and all versions shut down in May 2020 with the end of the licensing deal. Its legacy lies in demonstrating both the potential and the risks of mobile-exclusive, multiplayer-focused entries in major franchises, as well as the challenges of international licensing arrangements.
