The movie loosely follows the plot of Huxley's novel but adds a twist to the end. Just as Bernard Marx is about to take over the job of Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning, Lenina informs him she is pregnant with his child, conceived the night John Savage fell to his death. She refuses an abortion, preferring banishment. Bernard secretly lets her go and takes the job, but soon becomes unhappy, having learned to appreciate genuine emotions from knowing John. He follows Lenina into exile.

Reader's Guide

The film received mixed reception. The New York Times' Caryn James said the film fails to deal coherently with what is frightening about modern life. Radio Times' David Parkinson noted the over-simplification of the premise will disappoint admirers of the novel. City University of New York's Brittany Franklin found the movie excludes the praise of Ford. The Ringer's Keith Phipps observed that adapting the novel is tricky because much of it is short on incident and long on ideas. ScreenRant's Padraig Cotter noted the 1998 TV movie has a happy ending. The film is an abridged version of the original story and aired on NBC on April 19, 1998.
