Takashi Miike directed the Japanese horror film Audition, which adapts Ryū Murakami's 1997 novel.[1][2] The world premiere of Audition occurred at the Vancouver International Film Festival on October 2, 1999.[3]

Making and release

The Omega Project, which had success with Ring, purchased the rights to Murakami's novel and hired Miike and screenwriter Daisuke Tengan.[1][2] Model Eihi Shiina made her acting debut as Asami after meeting Miike and discussing her views on love.[4][5][6] The torture scene's "kiri-kiri-kiri" lines were added after discussion between Shiina and Miike.[7] Hideo Yamamoto, the cinematographer, and Kōji Endō, the composer, were among the frequent Miike collaborators who worked on Audition.[8][9]

Ryo Ishibashi accepted the lead role because he desired to collaborate with Miike.[4] Filming for Audition lasted roughly three weeks, with Tokyo serving as the location for outdoor shots.[10] October 2, 1999, was the date of Audition's premiere at the Vancouver International Film Festival.[3] At the 2000 Rotterdam International Film Festival, Audition earned both the FIPRESCI Prize and the KNF Award.[11][3][12]

March 3, 2000, marked the theatrical release date for Audition in Japan.[13] In the United States, the box office gross for Audition was $131,296.[11][14]

What the cited sources add

Arrow Video's product overview states that Audition "exploded onto the festival circuit" and "catapulted Miike to the international scene."[15] The same source notes that the film paved the way for Miike's later works like Ichii the Killer and 13 Assassins.[15] From a 35 mm interpositive, Arrow Video's release of Audition underwent a 2K resolution restoration.[16] Arrow Video has a 4K UHD version of Audition scheduled for a June 15, 2026 release.[16]
