The Last Day of Summer is a 2007 American fantasy comedy television film. Blair Treu directed it, and Kent Pierce wrote the script. It first aired on Nickelodeon on July 20, 2007.
Luke Malloy and his friends A.J. and Riley form a band called Steel Monkey. With two days left before middle school starts, Luke’s older sister Diana warns him about junior high—especially that his friends might leave him for a cooler crowd. A bully named Meat threatens incoming sixth graders. Luke ignores the warnings, and the boys sleep over in a tent at A.J.’s house.
The next day, they go to a carnival where Steel Monkey is scheduled for a talent show. Luke embarrasses himself in front of his crush, Alice. Meat and his friends threaten them. Later, at a skate park, an experienced skater named Snake gives them advice. The band feels nervous, worried about their reputation in middle school.
Luke wishes the day would never end and that he could do everything he wanted on his last summer day. Right before Steel Monkey’s performance, he is knocked unconscious by a large wooden board while retrieving a Frisbee. He wakes up in the same tent from that morning, realizing his wish has sent him back in time. He repeats the day, trying to impress Alice, teach Meat kindness, and impress Snake, but fails each time. He tries to avoid the board, but it still knocks him out. Every day, just before the talent show, he gets knocked out by something different—a football, a skateboard, even a falling meteor. He never makes it to the performance.
As the repeated days stretch into weeks, Luke grows tired of the carnival. He spends more time at the skate park, trying to impress Snake and his gang, called The Pound, to join them. Each time, he competes against a teenager named Gus for a spot. Luke consistently fails the skateboarding challenges. He returns to the carnival with A.J. and Riley, where he keeps encountering Meat and tries different ways to deal with him—sometimes relating to his home life (which backfires), sometimes avoiding him, once getting revenge by tying a porta potty cord to a departing truck.
Worried about Diana’s warning, Luke focuses more on the skate park and less on his friends. He starts ditching A.J. and Riley every morning, and they always find him later at the park. After several months of repeated days, Luke finally beats Gus in the Pound tryout.
