Freaky Friday (2018 film)

Freaky Friday is a 2018 American musical fantasy comedy television film that aired as a Disney Channel Original Movie on August 10, 2018. It is based on the 1972 novel and its 2016 stage adaptation, making it the fourth feature film in the franchise. The movie stars Cozi Zuehlsdorff and Heidi Blickenstaff.

The story begins with Ellie and her friends Karl and Monica discussing an annual school scavenger hunt. Ellie’s younger brother, Fletcher, performs a magic trick that fails to impress her, and he steals an hourglass that Ellie’s late father had given her. Meanwhile, Ellie’s mother, Katherine, is preparing for her upcoming wedding to Mike. Frustrated with each other—Katherine wants Ellie to be more responsible, and Ellie wishes her mother understood her—they argue over the hourglass and accidentally swap bodies. To reverse the switch, they need the identical hourglass that Katherine once owned, but she sold hers. Katherine, now in Ellie’s body, goes to school, while Ellie, in Katherine’s body, stays home.

The film follows the comedic chaos of the body swap. Katherine (as Ellie) deals with bullying from Savannah and bonds with Ellie’s crush, Adam. Ellie (as Katherine) tries to manage wedding preparations. They learn the missing hourglass has been added as a prize for the school scavenger hunt. Katherine (as Ellie) takes Fletcher on a walk and tells him parents lie and he will never go to Vegas, upsetting him. Adam finds Fletcher and convinces him to return home, then hints he might list the hourglass for the hunt. Katherine (as Ellie) obtains the hourglass during a fight with Savannah, winning the hunt. She goes to the wedding and tries to swap back with the real Ellie, but it fails. She stops the ceremony, declaring her love for Katherine, which finally reverses the swap and reconciles them.
