Plot

Film student Alex Wright is the only person who thinks the found footage horror film Grave Encounters is real. He puts a request online for any details about the movie and gets a reply from a user called DeathAwaits6. This leads him to the mother of Sean Rogerson, the actor who played Lance Preston in the film. She insists her son is still alive, but Alex figures out she has dementia and doesn't know Sean is dead. Alex then learns that everyone who worked on Grave Encounters is either missing or dead, except for the directors known as the Vicious Brothers, who were just interns for the film's producer, Jerry Hartfield, and had no direct involvement. Alex meets Hartfield, who admits the movie is actual found footage. Alex finds out the Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital is a real abandoned asylum in British Columbia, Canada. He goes there with his friends Trevor Thompson, Jennifer Parker, Tessa Hamill, and Jared Lee to meet DeathAwaits6. Inside, they find a Ouija board and use it to talk to spirits. They realize their online contact is not a person but a paranormal entity, which turns hostile and attacks them. The group tries to leave but a security guard stops them. While they argue, the guard goes inside to check a noise. They hear gunshots, go back in, and find the guard gone. The spirits attack again, splitting them up. Jared gets lost and is thrown out a window, and Tessa has her head crushed by an unseen force. Alex, Trevor, and Jennifer regroup and see the guard get electrocuted to death on an operating table. They escape the asylum and return to their hotel, but the elevator takes them back to the tunnels under the asylum. There they meet a lobotomized Sean, who has been trapped inside for over nine years, surviving on toilet water and rats. Sean explains the asylum is haunted because of Dr. Arthur Friedkin's satanic experiments and rituals, which merged the spirit world with the physical world. He shows them a red door wrapped in chains, saying it is the only way out. Sean also gives them a map he made, showing how the asylum is much larger than it seems and its layout constantly shifts. While the group sleeps, Sean, under the control of Dr. Friedkin, strangles Trevor to death and steals Alex's equipment to cut the chains on the red door.

Future

A third film, Grave Encounters 3: The Beginning, was planned by the Vicious Brothers in May 2015 but never entered production. On September 18, 2025, an American reboot was announced, with Justin Long starring and producing alongside Kate Bosworth and the Vicious Brothers. The project intends to update the original concept for cinema, amplifying the dread, claustrophobia, and psychological horror that made the first film a fan favorite.
