Sleepy Hollow (film)

A 1999 Gothic horror film based on Washington Irving's story.

Last updated

The film transforms Ichabod Crane from a schoolmaster into a banished New York City detective investigating a series of beheadings.[1] It earned a worldwide total of $206,068,340 at the box office.[2]

Making and release

Kevin Yagher conceived the idea of adapting Washington Irving's story into a feature film in 1993.[1] Yagher and Andrew Kevin Walker spent months developing a treatment that turned Ichabod Crane into a detective.[1] Depp modeled Ichabod's detective personality from Basil Rathbone's 1939 Sherlock Holmes.[3] Principal photography began November 20, 1998 at Leavesden Film Studios in Britain.[4]

The production built the town of Sleepy Hollow at the Culden Faw Estate in Hambleden.[4] A remastered 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray version was released on September 5, 2023.[5] In 1998, Paramount CEO Sherry Lansing revived the project, and Tim Burton was brought on as director in June of that year.[6] Johnny Depp joined the project as Ichabod Crane in July 1998, marking his third film collaboration with Burton.[7]

What the cited sources add

McFarlane Toys released several Sleepy Hollow action figures to coincide with the film's release.[8] The prequel comic explores Mary Van Tassel's backstory as a young girl named Sarah Archer.[9]
