Cabin Boy

A 1994 fantasy comedy that gained cult status.

Last updated

The 1994 comedy "Cabin Boy" follows a privileged prep school graduate who boards the wrong ship and encounters mythical creatures.[1] The film earned less in its opening weekend than its makers spent on lunch and recouped only a third of its $10 million budget.[1]

Making and release

Touchstone Pictures drastically reduced the film's budget after Burton's departure.[2] After seeing the surreal Fox sitcom "Get a Life," which featured anti-humor, Tim Burton reached out to Chris Elliott and Adam Resnick.[2] Burton aimed to create a comedy reminiscent of his first film, "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," and instructed Elliott and Resnick to produce a "Boy's Adventure" story that would serve as a starring role for Elliott.[2] Elliott proposed a nautical adventure, pointing to Thor Heyerdahl's book "Aku-Aku" and the 1937 film "Captains Courageous" as inspirations.[3]

After getting an offer to direct the biopic "Ed Wood," Burton stepped away from the director's role.[2] Burton suggested that Resnick, who had no prior feature film directing experience, should assume the director's position.[2] David Letterman, who had previously employed both Elliott and Resnick on "Late Night," made a cameo appearance.[4]

What the cited sources add

The Ringer account states that Resnick described the film as "shorthand for a bad movie."[1] Resnick told The A.V. Club that "Cabin Boy literally seemed to piss people off."[5] The film was released on Blu-ray through Kino Lorber, who dubbed it "The Contentious Classic That Angered a Nation."[1][6] ScreenCrush noted that the film received a "gorgeous new restoration" for its 25th anniversary.[6]
