Plot

Mercenary brothers Rozé and Ash, known as the Nameless Mercenaries, join local resistance to rescue princess Sakuya Sumeragi. Few know that Rozé is actually Sakuya in disguise, and the person she aims to rescue is her childhood friend and body double Sakura Haruyanagininomiya, who poses as Sakuya. Rozé wields the power of Geass, forcing absolute obedience, alongside Ash's piloting and her own tactical skill.

Production

In December 2020, a new Code Geass anime project was green-lit, with Yoshimitsu Ohashi directing at Sunrise, Noboru Kimura writing the screenplay from an original story by co-creators Gorō Taniguchi and Ichirō Ōkouchi. Takahiro Kimura co-designed characters with Shuichi Shimamura from CLAMP's original concepts, and Kenji Kawai composed the music. In December 2023, the project was announced as a four-part film series, with Kōhei Amasaki and Makoto Furukawa cast as Rozé and Ash. Originally titled Code Geass: Z of the Recapture, the name was changed due to the Z symbol's association with the Russian army during the invasion of Ukraine.

Reception

The first film did not reach the top ten at the Japanese box office in its opening week. The second and third films each debuted at number seven, and the final film entered at number ten. Richard Eisenbeis of Anime News Network gave the first film an A−, praising its main character and true Code Geass story. The second film received a B+, noted for focusing on intrigue rather than action outside the big battle. The third film earned an A−, with praise for its emotional beats involving Ash and Sakuya and its twists. The final film received a B−, criticized for pacing issues that hindered the story, described as an enjoyable but flawed sequel to a seminal 2000s anime.
