The primary villain of the Child's Play series is Chucky, whose birth name is Charles Lee Ray.[1] Chucky's debut was in the 1988 movie Child's Play, where a murderer uses voodoo to put his spirit into a "Good Guy" doll.[1] Brad Dourif provides the main voice for Chucky, a character invented by Don Mancini and John Lafia.[1]
Making and release
Chucky first appeared in the 1988 film Child's Play.[2] In the film, serial killer Charles Lee Ray uses a voodoo ritual to transfer his soul into a Good Guy doll after being shot by Detective Mike Norris.[2] The franchise originally started as Child's Play in 1988, using a Cabbage Patch Kids doll as inspiration for the premise.[3] Andy Barclay receives the doll from his mother Karen, after which Chucky starts to frighten the household.[2]
The only way for Chucky to regain a human form is to take over the body of Andy, the first individual he revealed his true name to.[2] Play Pals Inc. restores Chucky, bringing him back to life in Child's Play 2.[4] Chucky keeps going after Andy, who now lives with a foster family.[4] Eight years after the second film, Chucky comes back to life in Child's Play 3 when his blood gets combined with hot plastic that is being used to manufacture more Good Guy dolls.[5]
What the cited sources add
The direct-to-video film Cult of Chucky (2017) picks up where the previous film left off.[6] In that film, Nica has been blamed for all the murders that occurred in her home.[6] Dr. Foley explains that each doll had one out of fifty names and 2% of them were named "Chucky"[6] The film features multiple Good Guy dolls possessed by Chucky at the same time.[6]
At the first annual Horror Hall of Fame in 1990, Chucky gave a talk about horror movies from other countries.[7][8] To advertise Bride of Chucky, the character appeared on WCW Monday Nitro in October 1998, where he confronted Gene Okerlund and Rick Steiner.[7][9] Sarah Sherman played Chucky when the character made a comeback on Saturday Night Live in 2022.[10][11]
