Cinema of Iran

Iranian cinema is internationally acclaimed for its artistic films.

Last updated

Persian-language films from Iran that are considered art cinema have received international acclaim.[1]

Making and release

Cinema came to Persia at the beginning of the 20th century, only five years after the invention of cinema.[2] During the early 1970s, a movement called cinema motefävet, or New Iranian Cinema, came into being.[3] In 2001, Iran's feature film production reached 87, a significant increase from the 28 films made in 1980.[4]

What the cited sources add

Mehrabi notes that cinema in Iran began as a genteel hobby in the Qajar court, serving exclusive circles of courtiers and aristocracy for years.[5] Ardashes Batmagerian, known as 'Ardeshir the Armenian,' opened the first regular cinema in Tehran in 1912 with the cooperation of two French companies.[5] Ahmad Talebinejad, a film critic, stated that the New Wave in Iranian cinema began in 1968 due to political, social, and cultural developments of the 1950s and 1960s.[6] Talebinejad explained that the New Wave caused Iranian cinema to be viewed as a cultural category, whereas previously no intellectual was won over to cinema.[6]
