Sophia Loren

Italian actress and Golden Age Hollywood icon.

Last updated

Sophia Loren is an Italian actress born Sofia Costanza Brigida Villani Scicolone on 20 September 1934 in Rome.[1][2] With a career that has lasted more than seven decades, Sophia Loren is among the final remaining prominent figures from Hollywood's Golden Age.[3]

Making and release

Loren participated in her first beauty pageant at age 15.[4] She won the title of Miss Elegance 1950 at that pageant.[5] She appeared as an uncredited extra in the 1951 film Quo Vadis when she was 16.[6] Carlo Ponti adopted the stage name Sophia Loren for her, which was a variation on Swedish actress Märta Torén's name.[7]

The first film where she played the lead was Aida (1953), a performance that earned her positive reviews.[7] The movie The Gold of Naples (1954), with Vittorio De Sica as director, served as her career-launching role.[7]

What the cited sources add

The Biography account states that Loren's mother took her to Pozzuoli after her birth, where she grew up in extreme poverty.[8] The same source notes that during an aerial bombardment Loren was knocked down and split open her chin, leaving a scar.[8] That obituary also states that Ponti and Loren married by proxy in Mexico in 1957, with two male attorneys standing in for them.[9] The Il Messaggero article quotes Loren's sister Maria saying that Loren paid their father so Maria could take the Scicolone last name.[10]

The Corriere della Sera article confirms that Loren crowned the 71st Miss Italia winner in 2010.[11]
