Gameplay
The game is grounded in real Taekwondo, employing actual techniques and tournament rules. It features 19 fighters, each with distinct stats and special moves, and allows players to create a customized character with unique abilities. Controls are simple, using standard attack buttons and directional combinations. Four modes are available: tournament, versus, tag battle by turns, and practice. Before starting, the player can select either Japanese or Korean language. No move list is provided, and the vast majority of fighters lack special or hidden moves. Attacks are limited to the X, Y, B, and A buttons, each with different startup times. Using directional buttons, each character has eight moves that can be combined. A match ends after five rounds, as in a common Taekwondo competition of the time, or if an opponent is knocked out before the fifth round.
Characters
Among the 19 characters, eight are considered protagonists, being the first selectable in Story mode and having illustrations and back stories in the instruction booklet. Lee, age 25, is the Kansai region representative, a Taekwondo Dojang owner who enjoys cinema, aquariums, and teaching children at the Town Hall. He is rumored to be close to becoming the next Olympic representative. An all-around type with no glaring shortcomings, he wears a standard white and black Taekwondo Dobok, has hair depicted as black in booklets but brown in-game, and a white bandana. He is the only character shown wearing his dobok in the booklet and serves as the game's master or trainer in tutorials. Shun, age 20, is a college student from the Kanto region who enjoys tennis and skiing. Considered a genius talent and an ace in Taekwondo, he was famous as a fighter from a young age but appears to have had an accident requiring medical treatment, making him anxious about his performance. His stats are very high except for stamina, which is the lowest among all fighters. He appears in every booklet screenshot as Lee's opponent, hinting at a rivalry. He wears a green and black uniform, has slick red-brown hair with bangs, and is depicted in the booklet with a turtleneck sweater, shirt, and jacket. Like Lee, he is an all-around type, but his abysmally low stamina allows him to use his super technique more often than any other fighter.
