Marcello Romeo Lippi was born on 12 April 1948 in Viareggio, Tuscany. He played as a defender, mostly for Sampdoria, and later for Pistoiese and Lucchese before retiring in 1982. He never played for Italy’s senior national team.

After retiring, Lippi became a coach. He started with Sampdoria’s youth team, then managed lower-division sides before taking over Cesena in Serie A in 1989. He later coached Lucchese and Atalanta. His big break came in 1993–94 when he led Napoli to a UEFA Cup spot.

Juventus hired him next. In his first season, he won Serie A and the Coppa Italia, and reached the UEFA Cup final. The following season, he added the Supercoppa Italiana and the UEFA Champions League. Over the next few years, Juventus won more league titles, the UEFA Super Cup, the Intercontinental Cup, and reached two more Champions League finals.

Lippi moved to Inter Milan in 1999, but after a fourth-place league finish and a Coppa Italia final loss, he was sacked early in the 2000–01 season following a poor Champions League qualifying exit.

He returned to Juventus in 2001. Despite losing key players, he won two more Serie A titles, two Supercoppe, and reached the 2003 Champions League final, which Juventus lost on penalties.

In July 2004, Lippi became head coach of Italy. He led the team to win the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He was reappointed in 2008 but left after a poor 2010 World Cup, replaced by Cesare Prandelli.

In 2007, he managed a Europe XI team in a friendly against Manchester United, losing 4–3.

Lippi’s trophy list includes one World Cup, one UEFA Champions League, five Serie A titles, three Chinese Super League titles, one Coppa Italia, one Chinese FA Cup, four Italian Supercups, one AFC Champions League, one UEFA Super Cup, and one Intercontinental Cup. He is the only coach to have won both the UEFA Champions League and the AFC Champions League, and the first to win top club competitions on two continents plus a World Cup with a national team. The Times ranked him among the top 50 managers of all time in 2007. The IFFHS named him world’s best manager in 1996 and 1998, and best national coach in 2006.
