Bergomi made his professional debut for Inter at age 16 in the 1979–80 Coppa Italia, becoming the youngest player in club history. He won the Scudetto once (1988–89) and the UEFA Cup three times (1990–91, 1993–94, 1997–98). He held the record for most Inter appearances (758) until overtaken by Javier Zanetti in 2011. With Italy, he won the 1982 FIFA World Cup, playing in the final at age 18 years and 201 days, making him the second youngest player ever to win the title after Pelé. He also played in the 1986, 1990 (as captain, third place), and 1998 World Cups, and Euro 1988 (semi-finals). He made 81 international appearances and scored 6 goals.
