Role in Phineas and Ferb
Heinz Doofenshmirtz is a clumsy would-be villain whose main ambition is to seize control of the entire tri-state area from his brother Roger, the current mayor. Most episodes follow the same pattern: he dreams up a new scheme or gadget, which he inevitably ties to some miserable childhood memory from the fictional village of Gimmelshtump in Drusselstein. This country borrows elements from several Central European nations—Germany, Austria, Bohemia, Hungary, Transylvania, and Switzerland—shown through its half-timbered buildings, German-style grammar spoken by locals, and festivals resembling Fasching or Oktoberfest. His upbringing was harsh: his parents made him pose as a lawn gnome, forced him to wear girl’s clothes, openly favored his brother Roger, shipped him off to boarding school, and even missed his own birth. Doofenshmirtz frequently delivers long monologues and subjects his nemesis, Perry the Platypus, to over-the-top cartoon violence. His inventions usually fire off one successful blast before breaking apart, and that single shot often destroys whatever Phineas and Ferb have built that day, keeping their sister Candace from catching them in the act. Before turning to a life of villainy, he sold bratwurst for a living until the hot dog industry put him out of business. Though he fails at nearly every plan, he does pull off a few wins. In the TV movie Across the 2nd Dimension, he constructs an Other-Dimension-Inator with help from Phineas and Ferb, much to Perry’s annoyance. A smarter, more capable version of him from another reality serves as the film’s main bad guy. In the 2014 special Phineas and Ferb Save Summer, he builds an -inator that uses Jupiter’s gravity to push Earth into an early autumn. Even though Perry defeats him with a mop, the planet still moves, sparking chaos that lets Doofenshmirtz and other villains briefly take over City Hall and rule the tri-state area.
Role in Milo Murphy's Law
After a brief appearance in the first-season finale of Milo Murphy’s Law, Dr. Doofenshmirtz became a regular in season two. In The Phineas and Ferb Effect, he helped stop the Pistachions. Following that, Murphy’s Law collapsed his building, which was later rebuilt, forcing him to live as Milo’s houseguest in the garden shed. Though he abandoned his evil ways and later returned to them the next summer, he mostly tries to be good but still causes chaos with his Inators. After learning in Sick Day that O.W.C.A. paid Perry to watch him, Doofenshmirtz felt betrayed and lost his friendship with Perry. He then bonded with Dakota in Look at This Ship after Dakota lost his partner Cavendish, and they began investigating Cavendish’s disappearance. Cavendish admired Lucca Farberoff, but Doofenshmirtz disagreed with that view until the season’s end.
Other media
In early 2013, Disney launched a YouTube series called Doof's Daily Dirt, where Dr. Doofenshmirtz offers his thoughts on internet memes and pop culture fads, often well past their peak. Topics he covered included Facebook, online acronyms, Lolcatz, bacon-themed products, Psy's "Gangnam Style," One Direction, Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe," Honey Boo Boo, the Kardashians, and the Mayan apocalypse. The series ran for 13 episodes initially, got a second season, and wrapped up when the main show ended. Disney also set up a Twitter account that posts regularly in his voice. He appeared on the reality show Shark Tank in its fourth-season finale to present one of his inventions, made a voice cameo in the Hamster & Gretel episode "Strawberry Fest Forever," and was a playable character in the mobile game Disney Heroes: Battle Mode. In April 2026, he became a purchasable outfit in Fortnite.
Creation and design
They wanted to incorporate this in Phineas and Ferb, using a platypus secret agent due to its interesting appearance and role as a continuous nemesis. Dr. Meddleshmirtz, later changed to Doofenshmirtz, was created in the same vein. Every main character was designed using the geometric shapes of Tex Avery's Looney Tunes graphic style; Doofenshmirtz appears as an oval. The simplicity allows child viewers to copy them easily, and each is recognizable from a distance or by silhouette, a reference to Matt Groening and The Simpsons. Co-creator Dan Povenmire voices Doofenshmirtz, describing the voice as Eastern European, a voice he used at age fifteen during pillow fights with his five-year-old sister. Povenmire easily ad libs and improvises during recording sessions.
