Kaidou was one of the Four Emperors, ruling over a vast territory of islands in the New World. He was part of the group that included Shanks, Whitebeard, and Big Mom, whose combined power created a tense stalemate with the World Government. The geopolitical struggle between the World Government and the Four Emperors is a central conflict of the story.

Kaidou was defeated during the events of the Onigashima war, alongside Big Mom. Following their defeat, Monkey D. Luffy and Buggy were considered the new members to replace them as Emperors.
