Lore & Background
Magellan is a large, childlike green dragon who lives in the castle with Eureeka and other puppet characters. His tail has a mind of its own, and he does not always understand new concepts. When upset, Magellan tends to make great big sneezes that can shake the whole castle. According to Eureeka, he will do anything to try and stay awake past bedtime. One of his talents is blowing bubbles from his mouth.
Magellan has a mother-son or older sibling-like relationship with Eureeka. He is good friends with Batly, a clumsy blue bat, despite their differences. Magellan also has a pet of indeterminate species named Cooey, pet worm hybrids called Slurms, and living blue dots on his blanket known as Blanketeers. The character was performed by Noel MacNeal.
Reader's Guide
Magellan serves as a key character in Eureeka's Castle, embodying childlike curiosity and emotional vulnerability. His relationship with Eureeka provides a nurturing dynamic, while his friendship with Batly highlights acceptance of differences. His sneezes and bubble-blowing add physical comedy and visual interest. The character's design and performance contributed to the show's appeal as an early Nickelodeon preschool program, which won an Ace Award in 1990. Magellan's presence, along with the other puppets, helped establish the show's gentle, whimsical tone that aimed to engage young viewers. The series was developed by Debby Beece and Judy Katschke, with characters developed by R. L. Stine, and ran for 65 hour-long episodes and 35 second-season episodes before production ended in 1991.
