Lore & Background
Jake Long is a cool, laid-back skateboarder who enjoys video games, extreme sports, and music. He lives with his extended family in Manhattan: his parents Jonathan and Susan, his younger sister Haley, and his maternal grandfather Lao Shi. Jake's grandfather, a former Chinese Dragon, trains him in the magical ways of dragons. Jake also has a talking Shar-Pei guardian named Fu Dog. His best friends are Trixie Carter and Arthur P. 'Spud' Spudinski, who help him navigate both ordinary life and his secret identity.
Reader's Guide
Jake's primary romantic interest is Rose, a schoolmate who is secretly the Huntsgirl, a natural dragon-slayer from the Huntsclan. Despite their opposing roles, they eventually get together in the final episode. Jake's main adversaries include the Huntsman, leader of the Huntsclan, and the Dark Dragon, a dragon consumed by dark magic. The series explores Jake's growth as he learns to balance his responsibilities as the American Dragon with the challenges of being a teenager, including dealing with a crush, a younger overachieving sister, and a father unaware of the family's magical heritage.
