Lore & Background
Godzilla originated as a Godzillasaurus living on Lagos Island in 1944, where it stumbled into a naval battle between Japanese and American forces, driving the Americans away and saving Japanese soldiers before being grievously injured. Time travelers from the 23rd century, the Futurians, teleported the Godzillasaurus to alter history so Godzilla would not exist, but a Soviet nuclear submarine crash in the 1970s irradiated the same creature, creating a new Godzilla. It was roused to the surface by a volcanic eruption in 1984, beginning its rampage.
Reader's Guide
Godzilla (Heisei) is significant as the central figure of the Heisei film series, a continuity that reimagined the monster as a tragic, evolving being. Its story explores themes of nuclear fear, genetic manipulation, and environmental consequence, as seen in its battles with Biollante, King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Mechagodzilla. The character's arc from destroyer to reluctant protector reflects a shift in the franchise's tone, culminating in its dramatic death by meltdown in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. Its legacy includes the introduction of the Burning Godzilla form and the concept of Godzillasaurus as a species.
