Fin Fang Foom
Extraterrestrial dragon and Iron Man foe from Marvel Comics.
Fin Fang Foom is a giant, dragon-like alien from Marvel Comics, first introduced in *Strange Tales* #89 (October 1961). Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the creature later became a recurring enemy for Iron Man. Lee based the name on the 1934 film *Chu Chin Chow*, liking its rhythmic sound. The character has since appeared in cartoons, toys, trading cards, and video games, and IGN ranked him #99 on its list of top comic book villains.
In his first story, a Nationalist Chinese scholar named Chan Liuchow wakes Fin Fang Foom and tricks him into destroying a Communist invasion force aimed at Taiwan. Over the years, Foom battled It! The Living Colossus, was impersonated by the Midgard Serpent, and appeared in several Iron Man storylines. His origins were later expanded: he is a Makluan from the planet Kakaranathara (Maklu IV) in the Greater Magellanic Cloud. These aliens arrived in ancient China, intending to conquer Earth, and their dragon-like forms influenced Chinese culture and imperial symbolism. Using shapeshifting, most infiltrated human society, but Foom—the navigator—was kept in a catatonic state in a tomb as a reserve.
After being awakened and re-hibernated twice, the Mandarin freed Foom to help seize control of part of China. Foom reunited with a disguised teammate, Chen Hsu, and they began summoning the rest of their crew. The Mandarin, realizing he was tricked, teamed up with Iron Man and War Machine to apparently kill the Makluans. However, Foom’s spirit survived, bonding with a dragon statue and using a teenager, Billy Yuan, as a conduit to rebuild his body. Iron Man defeated him with help from Yuan’s mind, and Foom was taken to Monster Isle.
Later captured by the Collector, Foom was freed by the Fantastic Four and decided to reform, becoming a Buddhist. He entered a rehabilitation program with other monsters and was shrunken down. He also appeared in alternate versions, such as in *Mutant X Annual 2001*, *JLA/Avengers*, and as a copy created by Nightmare to battle the Hulk.
