Fictional character biography
Melinoë is the Underworld’s princess, born to Hades and Persephone and the younger sibling of Zagreus. After the titan Chronos revived and imprisoned the House of Hades, Hecate rescued the infant Melinoë and raised her in hiding at the Crossroads. Though she grew up with almost no bond to her family, she remains fiercely devoted to freeing them. Trained by Hecate in both witchcraft and combat, she wields magic alongside various weapons to battle Chronos’ forces.
Concept and creation
Melinoë is based on the mythological figure of the same name from Greek mythology, whom some scholars believe may be a syncretisation of Persephone. The team at Supergiant Games found the limited information about Melinoë compelling and wanted to explore her story and familial connections, as well as expand their vision of the underworld. They also sought to explore and highlight magic in Greek mythology and its often misunderstood connections.
Reception
Melinoë has received generally positive reception. Critics found her relationship with Nemesis intriguing due to the level of hostility between them, with one writer relating to the rivalry and another becoming invested in her story of rescuing her family. The relationship between Melinoë and Hecate was a standout moment, particularly how Hecate tests Melinoë's strength by serving as the game's first boss. Some writers contrasted her with Zagreus, describing Zagreus as a jock while Melinoë was more studious, relentlessly disciplined, and overflowing with her own charm. Her combat style was seen as more versatile than Zagreus', reflecting her backstory of training to defeat Chronos, with moves like Casts used tactically to hold enemies. She was described as more collected, calculating, and careful than Zagreus, with her sincerity and seriousness helping Hades II avoid being in its predecessor's shadow. Her mythological connections were discussed, with one writer noting before release that creative liberties should soften the mythological Melinoë's tormenting of mortals. Another discussed similarities and differences, noting that whether the mythological figure was an individual goddess is disputed, as well as whether she was the daughter of Zeus or Hades. A third writer appreciated that the game chose to take liberties with the Zeus and Hades aspect of the mythological figure's history.
