History
Beatcats was created by Sanrio and Sega Toys as their third collaborative effort, following Jewelpet and Rilu Rilu Fairilu. Unlike earlier collaborations that developed into animated series and manga, this franchise focuses on music, presenting the characters as a five-member virtual group. The aim is to appeal to elementary and junior high school students with a fashionable, cute, and cool image, using energetic dance and songs to encourage excitement, love, and friendship. Sega Toys and Sanrio worked with Pony Canyon for the band's songs and vocals. The companies plan to release songs and dance videos through social media to resonate with teens and build the group's world and lore. A smartphone game app and various merchandise were also announced. The group debuted on October 8, 2020, with a digital single streamed on services including Apple Music, Spotify, and Amazon Music.
