Plot

They plan to loot the Khan's treasury beneath the new temple of the cult of Ahriman, whose priests hope to revive their ancient god. Conan accepts aid from wizard Volvolicus and his daughter Layla. After stealing the treasure, Conan is pursued by the Manhunters, a band of bounty hunters led by a captain more powerful than Conan. He thwarts them while preventing Ahriman's resurrection.

Reception

Don D'Ammassa noted that Roberts did not recreate Howard's character exactly, making Conan more intellectual and less inclined to solve every problem with a sword, but his evocation of the barbaric setting was superior to most other writers in the series. D'Ammassa called the novel an excellent pastiche with well drawn characters and exciting situations, where Conan wins through brains as much as brawn. Reviewer Ryan Harvey called Roberts the most consistently successful and entertaining of Tor's Conan authors, showing deft ability with storytelling and action scenes.
