Plot

In 2010, InGen operates a dinosaur genetics laboratory on Île Saint-Hubert in the Atlantic Ocean, housing transgenic and mutated dinosaurs. When a six-limbed Tyrannosaurus called Distortus rex escapes, personnel abandon the island. By 2027, most of Earth's climate is unsuitable for de-extinct animals, which survive only in equatorial exclusion zones. Martin Krebs, a ParkerGenix executive, hires former covert operative Zora Bennett and paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis to collect DNA-containing biomaterial from three large prehistoric specimens for a cardiovascular disease treatment. In Suriname, Zora recruits associate Duncan Kincaid, maritime pilot LeClerc, mercenary Nina, and security expert Bobby Atwater. The team illegally travels to Île Saint-Hubert to gather samples from the aquatic Mosasaurus, terrestrial Titanosaurus, and avian Quetzalcoatlus. Meanwhile, Reuben Delgado sails near the island with his daughters Teresa and Isabella, and Teresa's boyfriend Xavier Dobbs. A Mosasaurus attacks and overturns their sailboat; Reuben sends a distress call. Despite Martin's insistence on staying mission-focused, the expedition team rescues the family. The Mosasaurus resurfaces, and the team collects a blood sample using a modified dart gun. A pack of Spinosaurus joins the attack, killing Bobby. Martin prevents Teresa from radioing for help and does nothing to stop her falling overboard; Xavier, Reuben, and Isabella jump in after her, separating from the team. The ship runs aground, and a Spinosaurus kills Nina. Zora reveals a rescue helicopter will circle the island in 24 hours if radio silence is maintained. The team locates a Titanosaurus herd and obtains a sample. They decide to retrieve Quetzalcoatlus amniotic liquid from an egg. Zora, Henry, and LeClerc rappel down a cliff to a nest inside an ancient cave temple. A Quetzalcoatlus returns and devours LeClerc, but Zora and Henry secure the last sample.

Production

David Koepp co-wrote the original Jurassic Park (1993) and wrote The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997). Steven Spielberg directed both films and returned as executive producer for future installments. Koepp initially turned down writing another film, believing he had nothing left to contribute, but did uncredited script work on Jurassic World Dominion (2022). Colin Trevorrow, who spent nine years on the Jurassic World trilogy, had no involvement with Rebirth. Development began shortly after Dominion's release, with an early story idea from Spielberg that features heavily in the final film. Spielberg brought his idea to Koepp and asked him about writing a new film, leading to an exchange of ideas. Koepp took on the project upon learning how deeply involved Spielberg would be. They worked closely over six months to develop the screenplay, seeking to revive the tone of the original Jurassic Park trilogy. Koepp said, "We decided early on that, because the first and second trilogies have concluded their stories, let's not restrict ourselves in any way – let's have all-new characters in an all-new location." Koepp wanted to revisit the concept of humans in a dinosaur environment, as the two preceding films had shifted toward animals living among people worldwide. He felt that idea had been thoroughly explored, saying, "Once that happened, you can go anywhere in the world and you can have as many crazy dinosaur situations as you want. I was more limited. I find limitations freeing." Koepp and Spielberg devised a story involving a secret island facility for dinosaur research and development, then determined why characters would visit such a place.

Marketing

The title and initial images for Jurassic World Rebirth came out on August 29, 2024. The film was billed as a tribute to the original Jurassic Park, with its advertising aimed squarely at that movie’s fans. Its first trailer dropped on February 5, 2025, after several stills had been released. Empire’s Ben Travis called the trailer “visually stunning” and said it recalled the first Jurassic Park. A 60-second spot aired during Super Bowl LIX on February 9, 2025, and a second trailer followed on May 20, 2025. Mattel and Lego created toy lines tied to the film. Other promotional partners included 7-Eleven (along with Speedway and Stripes) and Funko. NBA player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander starred in a commercial that ran during the 2025 playoffs. Universal wanted Scarlett Johansson to join Instagram to help promote the movie, but she refused, confident it would do fine without that. She did, however, appear in an online video promoting the Mattel toys.

Reception

Jurassic World Rebirth pulled in $339.6 million domestically and $532.8 million overseas, adding up to $872.4 million worldwide. Early forecasts from The Hollywood Reporter pegged its five-day domestic opening between $100 and $125 million, while Deadline Hollywood guessed $115 to $135 million. As release week began, Deadline predicted a global opening weekend near $260 million, and by July 5, 2025, that worldwide five-day estimate had climbed to $312 million. The film opened with $30.5 million on day one, pushing the five-day projection to $133.5 million, then $25.3 million the next day raised it to $137.5 million. On July 4, it earned $26.3 million, leading Deadline to revise its domestic five-day estimate to $141.2 million, and a $35.6 million haul on July 5 pushed that to $145.3 million. It ultimately debuted to $147.8 million over the five-day Fourth of July holiday, including $92 million for the three-day weekend, and $322.6 million worldwide. In its second weekend, it dropped 56.2% to $40.3 million, landing in second place behind the new Superman film. It finished as the seventh highest-grossing movie of 2025 in the U.S. and Canada. In India, it set a franchise record for the biggest opening day without any preview screenings. Its top international markets were China ($41 million), the United Kingdom ($16.6 million), Mexico ($13.9 million), and Germany ($7.6 million). After one full week, the global total sat just under $410 million, and it stayed atop the Chinese box office in its second weekend with $11.1 million. CinemaScore audiences gave it a "B" average. Critics were split; Variety's Peter Debruge called it an updated version of Spielberg's original ride that feels unnecessary to the franchise's mythology.
