Federal Hockey League team based in Danbury, Connecticut.

Last updated

The Danbury Titans were a professional ice hockey team based in Danbury, Connecticut. Replacing the Danbury Whalers, the team was founded as an expansion team in the Federal Hockey League. They played their home games at the Danbury Ice Arena.

History

The Danbury Whalers lost their home when the Danbury Ice Arena refused to extend their contract and gave them until April 17, 2015, to leave. For the previous five seasons, the Whalers had drawn the largest home crowds in the Federal Hockey League. On June 3, 2015, the FHL created a new team in Brewster, New York, called the Stateline Whalers, led by former Danbury Whalers CEO Herm Sorcher and playing at the Brewster Ice Arena. The original Whalers were placed on hiatus and gave up their name and territorial rights to the Brewster club.

Later, on June 27, 2015, the FHL approved a replacement team in Danbury. Local businessmen Bruce Bennett and Edward Crowe became the owners. Bennett named the new squad the Danbury Titans and signed a six-year lease at the Danbury Ice Arena. Bennett and Crowe also took over the Brewster franchise, renaming it the Brewster Bulldogs and cutting all ties to the former Whalers.

In their first season, 2015–16, the Titans finished first in the regular season but were swept in the league championship by the Port Huron Prowlers. The Danbury Titans folded after just two seasons.
