Leviathan Species

Living ships with souls that carry crews across the stars.

Leviathans are colossal, sentient bio-mechanical ships that serve as the primary vessels for travel in the Farscape universe. Unlike standard spacecraft, they are living entities with their own consciousness and personalities. The most prominent example is Moya, a Leviathan used by the Peacekeepers as a prison transport before she escaped with her crew. Two regular characters on the show, Rygel and Pilot, were entirely Henson Creature Shop creations, highlighting the deep integration of these creatures into the series' production.

Quick Facts

Classification: Living Entity; Bio-mechanical Ship
Notable individuals: Moya, Talyn

Lore & Background

The crew of Moya lived inside this large bio-mechanical ship, which is explicitly described as a living entity. The series highlights the unique nature of these beings through the character of Pilot, who serves as the ship's operator and is an entirely Henson Creature Shop creation alongside Rygel. In a significant plot point, it is revealed in Season Two that Moya was already pregnant from a prior Peacekeeper experiment, not triggered by an accidental activation in Season One. This pregnancy culminates in the birth of Talyn, described not as a peaceful Leviathan but as a volatile hybrid warship designed by the Peacekeepers. This event underscores the capacity of these living ships to be manipulated by external forces for military purposes, resulting in a child that is fundamentally different from its mother.
