Linda (Fargo)

"Linda" is the seventh episode of Fargo's fifth season and the 48th episode overall. It aired on FX on December 26, 2023. Noah Hawley and April Shih wrote it; Sylvain White directed. The season takes place in Minnesota and North Dakota in fall 2019. It follows Dot Lyon, a typical Midwestern housewife whose hidden past resurfaces when she gets into trouble with authorities, including North Dakota Sheriff Roy Tillman, who has been hunting her for a long time. In this episode, Dot tries to fix past mistakes, and Gator escalates his conflict with Munch.

Nielsen Media Research reported about 0.576 million households watched it, with a 0.08 ratings share among adults 18–49. Critics praised it highly, especially for its originality and revelations about Dot's past, though some disliked the twist.

**Plot:** At elderly Irma's house, her son arrives, verbally abuses her, and demands money. He finds Munch living there and insists Munch pay rent. Munch gives him a roll of bills, then kills him with an axe as the son leaves. Dot drives a long distance, nearly falls asleep dreaming of her family, and stops for pancakes at a diner. Continuing, she finds a cache with a postcard for Camp Utopia signed "Linda." There, she learns Linda Tillman, Roy's first wife, runs a refuge for women escaping abusive partners—all using the name "Linda" while staying. Dot's return to Camp Utopia is rocky; she struggles to fit in and accuses Linda of being complicit in Roy's abuse and disappearing. Linda denies it. The camp holds a "trial" using a puppet show for each to argue their version of events.

Meanwhile, Gator loads a rifle, tracks Munch's car signal, and finds him rocking in a chair inside a nearby house. He shoots through the window, but it's only Irma's son's corpse, rocked by Munch pulling a rope. Gator tries to retrieve the money bag from Munch's car but is attacked by Irma. He pushes her away; she hits her head on the sidewalk and dies. Munch comes out and looks at the scene, anguished.

During the "trial," Dot tells how, after juvenile delinquency, the Tillman family took her in, and she saw Roy abuse Linda. Dot says Linda pushed her onto Roy, and Roy abused Dot when Linda wasn't around. Linda eventually escaped, and Roy married Dot, continuing the abuse cycle. The "trial" convinces Linda to return with Dot as a witness to arrest Roy.
