Heroscape

Expandable miniature wargame with interlocking 3D terrain tiles.

Last updated

Heroscape is an expandable turn-based miniature wargaming system originally produced by Hasbro subsidiaries from 2004 until 2010. It uses pre-painted miniature figures on a board built from interlocking hexagonal tiles, allowing players to construct a variable 3D landscape. The game's system and production quality were praised by fans even after discontinuation, leading to a revival in 2024.

History

Heroscape debuted in 2004 through the Milton Bradley Company under Hasbro, with the master set Rise of the Valkyrie containing thirty plastic figures, corresponding cards, eighty-five terrain pieces, and two ruins. From 2004 to 2008, releases included another master set (Swarm of the Marro), ten small-figure expansions, three large-figure expansions, four large terrain expansions, and various exclusive sets via partnerships with Walmart, Toys "R" Us, and Gen Con.

In 2007, a Marvel Comics master set titled The Conflict Begins was released, featuring ten comic book characters and urban terrain. In 2008, the brand shifted to Wizards of the Coast, which also handled Dungeons & Dragons.

From 2008 to 2010, a D&D-themed master set (Battle for the Underdark) and three small-figure expansions appeared. On November 3, 2010, Wizards of the Coast announced discontinuation to focus on Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering, canceling planned expansions including a second Marvel wave. The announcement sparked backlash from the community, though the game remained popular through fan activity.

Reception

The interlocking hexagonal system and high production quality of Heroscape materials were praised by fans years after discontinuation. In a review for Black Gate, Howard Andrew Jones gave the game and its expansion a positive recommendation, noting its family appeal and tactical depth. A 2022 retrospective review by Comic Book Resources ranked Heroscape as the best discontinued board game, highlighting its combination of Lego-like construction with miniature game excitement and noting that modern plastic costs would make such a game difficult to replicate.

Fan-generated content and tournaments

Players have created extensive fan content, including custom terrain from aquarium plants, battle boards, ruins, buildings, and sci-fi pieces. Custom figures are made by creating cards for other miniatures or 3D printing. Groups like the Classic Customs Creators of Valhalla (C3V) maintain continuity with official characters, while the Soldiers of Valhalla (SoV) review customs for inclusion in "Fanscape"; together they form Valhalla Customs (VC). The Comics Customs Creators Guild (C3G) produces superhero customs using HeroClix figures, play-tested against Marvel Heroscape figures.

Other groups create figures for franchises such as Star Wars, Middle-Earth, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The most prominent community for custom content is on Heroscapers.com.

Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast never held official events, but a fan-run tournament scene began soon after release, with major tournaments at Gen Con and Comic-Con, plus regular local and regional events. In August 2022, Avalon Hill announced a HasLab crowdfunding campaign for a new expansion, Heroscape: Age of Annihilation, which ran from October to November 2022 but did not receive enough backers. In June 2023, Renegade Game Studios announced it would handle the reboot after a licensing deal with Hasbro.
