On her journey, Talon discovers she possesses a mysterious supernatural power that she must learn to control to save herself and defend the world against a fanatical religious dictator. The first season presents her backstory and journey to Galwood Outpost, where she confronts the ambassador for the Prime Order, Everit Dred. The massacre was ordered by the Prime Order's leader, not solely by Dred.

In the second season, Talon's enemies include members of her own Blackblood race, and she learns of two clans: the militant Black Fists and her pacifist ancestors. Her power derives from the Asterkinj her mother gave her, and there are seven kinjes total, each granting a different power.

The third season's shoot in Serbia was abruptly suspended in March 2020, mid-way through episodes six and seven, when the global pandemic halted all work; cameras rolled again on June 12, 2020. The CW had already committed to a third season in October 2019, and just before that season's October 8, 2020 premiere, ordered an additional thirteen episodes that would form the fourth season. Within the Blackbloods themselves, a deep ideological rift divides the pacifist ancestors who once made peace with humans from the militant Black Fists, who advocate total human extermination. The Asterkinj, the sacred artifact Talon inherited from her dying mother, is one of at least six kinjes, each conferring a unique power on its bearer. The Blackblood Prophecy, which speaks of summoning slayers of men, becomes a moral fork in the road as Prime Order armies besiege the outpost. In the later seasons the United, Prime Order remnants, and the ancient gods of the Realm all converge, forcing Talon to balance dozens of blackbloods, human allies, and divine threats while carrying guilt over summoning Yavalla from the Plane of Ash and failing to evacuate the remaining blackbloods before the Black Fists massacred them.
